Big Gear

  • Backpack (Osprey Tempest 20L): I found 20L to be just enough. My friend used REI’s 25L pack.
  • Bladder (Gregory 3D Hydro 2L): My friend and I never finished our 2L bladders but it felt like a sturdy option.
  • Trekking Poles (Cascade Mountain Tech, Carbon Fiber Cork Grip): My friend was fine without one, but I saw many folks (including young people) using trekking poles. I was very happy that I brought a pair with me. You can rent them, but especially if you plan on getting in late the night before your hike, it’s less logistics to bring one. Note that you will need to check them in; my flight included 2 checked bags (one luggage + one smaller “hand” luggage) so it wasn’t an issue for me.

Outerwear

  • Thin Down Jacket (Uniqlo Ultra Light Down Jacket): I hiked in mid-September and wore this at the start of hikes & on the long, steep descents. I like these for hiking because they’re easy to stuff.
  • Rain Poncho (Clear Poncho): I find ponchos much more easy to wear/enough when it rains (rather than wearing a waterproof pant layer for example).

Active Clothing

  • 2x Long Sleeves (Lululemon Swiftly Tech Long-Sleeve Shirt 2.0 Waist Length)
  • 2x Sports Bras
  • 1x Leggings
  • 2x Hiking Socks

PJs & Intimates

  • Warm leggings: For hut meals & hanging
  • Warm long sleeves: For hut meals & hanging
  • T-shirt: The huts are actually quite warm, so I slept in a t-shirt and shorts.
  • Shorts
  • 2x Undies: I would wash a pair every evening and let it dry overnight. There’s hangers in the dirt room and hooks (ratchet, I know, but people get it).

Shoes

  • Hiking Boots
  • Sliders: Several people walked around huts in hiking socks only. I liked having my sliders also for the showers.

Hiking Accessories & Leisure

  • Sun Hat
  • Fleece Hat: This came in handy during cold mornings and also when I got cold while descending.
  • Sports Sunglasses
  • Gloves: While many people prefer scrambling down rocks barehanded, I much prefer having my hands protected with waterproof gloves.

Hut Essentials

  • Sleeping Bag Liner: I was required to use this at one hut (though noone checked). You can usually rent one if you don’t wanna bring one.
  • Inflatable Pillow: I slept with this on top of the hut that required a liner (for my own cleanliness). All the huts pretty much have pillows, though.
  • Microfiber Towel: I took a shower every night and used a quick-dry towel.
  • Headlamp: You’ll end your hikes in daylight (because you need to check into a hut before dinner time which is usually around 7pm), but this actually comes in handy when you’re rummaging through your stuff in the hut bunk beds after people turn the lights off.
  • Ear plugs: While people slept early and were respectful, the ear plugs were great mostly for snoring.

Toiletries

  • Sunscreen
  • Sunscreen lip balm
  • Shampoo
  • Conditioner
  • Toothbrush

Personal Items

  • Passport: While I didn’t ever need this, I felt like having it was a good idea. I’d prolly bring it with me again.
  • Credit card: tbh I did bring 100 USD in cash (didn’t have time to exchange it lolz). Turns out, the huts are very comfortable & I paid with credit card for any and all purchases (ex. paying for our stay, keychain souvenir).
  • Journal/Kindle: I brought a journal. To be honest, I didn’t have time to journal, and the huts don’t really have space to hang (other than your assigned meal tables) as all extra space is pretty much used for bunk beds.
  • Portable Charger: While I never ran out of phone battery, it was comforting to know that I had a charging brick in case (since we were using AllTrails maps for our hikes).
  • Charger: If you wear a fitness watch (like my Garmin), don’t forget to bring a charger for that!
  • Converter

Snacks

I bought snacks at a grocery store in Bolzano (where I started and ended my trip) the night before our hike. This was just the right amount.

  • 4x Protein Bars
  • Nuts
  • Biscuits
  • Sausages
