When I moved to New York from San Francisco, I was terrified I’d be completely overrun by the crowds and the yellow cabs. However, I found that my new block was actually much calmer than where I’d lived in SF. All thanks to the beauty of living above 115th street, among the best Harlem cafes.
When it comes to Manhattan, tourists and New Yorkers alike tend to forget there’s a lot going on above Columbus Circle. And more specifically, a lot of coffee. Having lived in the Harlem/Morningside Heights area for the past two years, completely addicted to coffee, I like to think I’m something of an expert.
While coffee shops in Manhattan, NY below 59th St can be overcrowded with lines that stretch down the block, there’s much more space to spread out at a Harlem cafe. Here are some of the best coffee shops and best Harlem cafes above 115th St.
Best Harlem Cafes
1. Lucille’s
There is a lot to love about Lucille’s. Besides their very classic and delicious list of drink options, they have a ton of food to choose from, all of it organic and health-based. They mostly serve breakfast options, as well as a few sandwiches, wraps, and salads.
One of the coolest aspects of Lucille’s is the live jazz. Every Thursday at 8 PM, musicians play sets in the quaint coffee bar. Harlem has a long history of great jazz musicians, so this is a hometown hit.
2. Sugar Hill Cafe
Sugar Hill is more of a breakfast/brunch restaurant that also happens to have amazing coffee.
Known for their French toast and avocado toast, Sugar Hill is typically packed on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. If you’re looking for a lowkey spot to get some work done in, Sugar Hill is the perfect destination mid-week.
Tea is also something I feel like a lot of coffee shops get wrong. Not having enough flavors is the chief issue for me. Sugar Hill has an EXPANSIVE list of flavors, so you won’t run up against the same chamomile vs. green tea issues as other spots.
3. Hungarian Pastry Shop
There aren’t enough words to fully describe my love for the Hungarian Pastry shop. Besides being a top destination for the New York writing scene, HPS (as it’s known among regulars) is a no frills coffee shop that’s been serving up Hungarian baked goods since 1961. The pastries are Hungarian classics, so look elsewhere for a New York bagel.
One quick note– there is no wifi at HPS, and outlets are scarce. This is still one of my favorite places to work. I just have to plan ahead with a hot spot and a fully charged computer.
4. Sojourner Coffee
Located in the heart of Harlem, Sojourner Coffee is as basic as it gets. In the best way possible. Their menu features a tight list of items including all the classic hits (espressos, lattes, cappuccinos, matcha), along with a staff-chosen drip of the day. The food options are limited, but the scones and muffins are top notch.
This is a great grab-and-go stop. Sojourner Coffee has delicious coffee at a price that’s practically unheard of, but the setting options aren’t ideal. Still at the top of my list, but only while en route some place I’ll need a cup of coffee at!
5. The Monkey Cup
Growing up, my favorite coffee shop was the Starbucks inside of a Barnes and Nobles. Super basic, but there’s nothing like a cup of coffee surrounded by books. Pristine.
That’s what you’ll get at The Monkey Cup. Twinkly overhead lights, bookshelves on every single wall, and amazing coffee creations with monkey designs in the foam, this is my dream. Definitely the kind of coffee shop you’ll want to spend some time in throughout the day.
6. I Like It Black
A Black-owned business, I Like It Black is one of the top, keystone cafes in Harlem. They have a unique and chill vibe that lends itself to easy sipping.
I’m a fan of a simple menu at cafes. I can’t make big decisions while under caffeinated. That’s part of the appeal for me with I Like It Black– their menu is simple, effective, and tasty. Of all the best Harlem cafes, this is one of the most popular, so go in early to get a good seat.
7. Double Dutch Espresso
Described as the home of “found objects,” I love the unique decor of Double Dutch. It’s a super cute aesthetic.
With plenty of places to sit as well as a spectacular drinks and food menu, Double Dutch is at the very top of my list! Plus, they have an outdoor bar against the exterior of the restaurant, which is so fun as the weather gets warmer.
8. Plowshares Coffee Roasters
The best thing about Plowshares? The space! This cafe is doubly as spacious as any other on the list, which makes it a great option for groups of friends or a date.
In addition to loads of seating, Plowshares features live music in the early evening. And they have great coffee, to boot.
9. Joe Coffee Company
Okay, Joe Coffee Company is definitely basic AF. And technically a block or two below Harlem. They’re a New York-based chain, kind of like Philz for the East Coast. But I’m a fan of this particular spot for the location. And yes, for the coffee too.
With wall to wall windows, this is my dream view of uptown Manhattan! It’s located on the very tip of Columbia University’s campus, but all types of people frequent– not just students. My absolute favorite thing to do is go sit during sunrise or sunset for the panoramic views.
The coffee at Joe’s is consistently delicious. I’ve never had a bad cup, and the lattes in particular are really freaking good. And don’t sleep on the pastries either!
10. IL Caffe Latte
Italian coffee is the coffee of my childhood. My Italian grandfather claims there’s none better, so I am biased as I suggest Il Caffe. Biased, but not wrong.
In addition to dark, Italian roast coffee, this Harlem-based cafe features tons of delicious Italian treats including all types of cake, pies, cookies, and tiramisu.

As a coffee drinker, there is no better city to live in than New York. As a coffee drinker who also loves a good deal and a fun place to sit, the best Harlem cafe reign supreme. While each cafe on this list has their own unique vibe and benefits, all of them have one very important characteristic in common: flavorful, hot coffee that will wake you up to start your day.
